Friends of the Amargosa Basin thanks the USDA and stands with the Pit River Tribe in urging the Biden administration to designate the proposed Sáttítla national monument.
Shoshone, CA – Friends of the Amargosa Basin has issued the following public statement from its Executive Director Cameron Mayer thanking the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for hosting a public meeting regarding the proposed Sáttítla national monument in California. We furthermore urge President Biden to take necessary action in the form of official designation.”
“The USDA’s hosting of a public meeting on December 7th, 2024, in Weed, California honors overwhelming enthusiasm and commitment at the grassroots level for the establishment of the proposed Sáttítla national monument. This impressive landscape in northeastern California is culturally important, is notable for its striking geology, and is crucial for maintaining water resources for millions of people, along with access to high quality recreation. Sáttítla is a landscape under threat and is in need of greater protection.”
“We particularly support the Biden administration’s commitment to honoring tribal sovereignty, tribal connections to homelands, and indigenous knowledge. We acknowledge and respect the Pit River Nation’s crucial role in leading this campaign to protect Sáttítla for future generations and are appreciative of the Biden administration for listening to tribal voices.”
“While we take time to extend our gratitude towards the USDA for convening a public forum through which tribal leaders, community supporters, and diverse stakeholders had an opportunity to express their thoughts and perspectives on the proposed Sáttítla national monument, we continue to stand in solidarity with the Pit River Tribe in urging President Biden to permanently protect over 200,000 acres of cherished public lands.”
