It's that time of year! 🐍Snake season in the Amargosa Basin is not restricted to summer necessarily, but this is a likely time to run into our reptile friends on roads, trails, and other places.

⚠️Always view from a distance, never intentionally disturb or antagonize, scan the ground when walking trails and driving roads,🛣 and keep pets on a leash 🐶 to make every interaction the the most positive one that it can be!

Save The Date! 🌿📝

In collaboration with artist Deborah Morgan of Ealain Skye Studio, Friends of the Amargosa Basin is hosting a nature journaling workshop in Shoshone, CA on November 15th, 2025.

This event is FREE, but will be limited to 20 pre-registered participants. It will start at 8:30am and go on until 3:30pm (with a break for lunch), and will involve professional instruction and a field walk.

Come learn a new artistic skill and experience the limitless inspiration that the natural beauty of the Amargosa Basin provides! All skill levels welcome. Instructional materials will be provided. Lunch will be up to participants, though light snacks and refreshments will be provided.

We at Friends of the Amargosa Basin are disheartened to hear of the Bureau of Land Management's (BLM) approval for the expansion of the St Cloud Zeolite mine near Death Valley Junction, CA and just south of Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge. Activities include the drilling of 43 boreholes up to 200 feet deep in fragile wetland habitat to determine the extent of mineral resources beyond existing operations.

This expansion of activity is planned within the Amargosa North Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC), designated for its outstanding natural qualities. These lands are sacred, provide water to our communities, and sustain life in the basin. This is a highly sensitive area in which drilling activities could pose a significant risk to shallow groundwater resources, nearby springs, and flows that support the Amargosa River.

Moreover, these same lands are included in the proposal for an Amargosa Basin National Monument. Impacts to sensitive areas such as this can affect the integrity of an entire landscape, as the ripple effects spread out across the land and the precious groundwater that sustains unique species and habitats.

Last April, we joined a number of other organizations and local residents in local engagement and comments during the environmental analysis process to detail concerns centering on impacts to groundwater and other natural qualities in this area. We will continue to join others in defending this land from inappropriately sited projects while we advocate for its permanent protection.

⏳️Time passes as the desert creek💧 flows.

Salt Creek is a spring-fed oasis in the Amargosa Basin that flows along a thin channel in a wash. As its name suggests, it is highly saline, registering as bitter to the taste.

Within the Salt Creek Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC), designated to protect outstanding natural and cultural resources, Salt Creek also runs along a delightful hiking trail that allows visitors to explore the landscape and its significant values.

⚠️We are currently in the hot months. 🔥🌡It is recommended to hike this area from October-April. If you do go now, start early, take water, and don't stray too far from the safety of your vehicle.

July 12th was the 25th anniversary of the National Conservation Land (NCL) system, which protects, and highlights the national importance of, millions of acres of America's most priceless and incredible public lands for the benefit of current and future generations. National Monuments, Conservation Areas, Wilderness, and more are included in this system.
