Public Lands are Ours and are NOT for Sale!
Say NO WAY to massive public land sell-offs proposed as part of the Federal Budget.
In the current budget bill (the “Big Beautiful Bill”) making its way through the United States Senate is an amendment introduced by Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) that mandates the sale of at least 3 million acres of public lands on a recurring basis. This puts some of our most cherished places at risk of being lost forever.
The Senate aims to pass its version of the current budget bill by July 4th, making it urgent that we stop public land sell-off offs now before they occur.
The lands at risk by the proposed sell-offs include lands in the Amargosa Basin that are included in the proposal for an Amargosa Basin National Monument!
Here are a few key talking points:
- Public access to lands will be restricted if lands are sold off and we stand to lose some of our favorite places.
- Selling off public lands to pay for tax cuts is short sighted and leaves less of a legacy for future generations to experience and enjoy.
- There is no language in Senator Lee’s proposed amendment to mandate any affordable housing, and much of the lands available to be sold are not suitable for housing (increased risk for wildfires or other natural disasters, lack of proximity to urban areas).
- Tell your own story about a special place that you enjoy and why it shouldn’t be at risk of being sold off to the highest bidder.
Here are Ways You Can Take Action:
- Call Your Senators!

In California
Alex Padilla (DC Office): (202)-224-3553
Adam Schiff (DC Office): (202)-224-3841
- Post and comment: On the social media channels for your senators and on those of other senators in key positions (such as Mike Lee of Utah). Tell them why it’s such a bad idea to sell off public lands for short-term gains. In general, keep it positive and avoid trolling.
